What is EFT?

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT Tapping) is a proven stress management technique for the mind and body.  It is often referred to as tapping.

It is a brief technique combining elements of exposure and cognitive therapy, and somatic stimulation and uses a two finger tapping process to stimulate the pressure points on the face and upper body whilst repeating a cognitive statement or phrase relating to the negative emotion.

There are 8 Tapping points on the face and upper body for adults and 4 points for children.

EFT Tapping can be effective in any situation, event or feeling and releases the negative emotion from the mind and body often within minutes, leaving you in a calm, clear minded state. Tapping on these acupressure points is likely to resolve or, at least, calm and lighten the level of the negatively charged emotion.

EFT Tapping is used to eliminate food cravings, to encourage body-shape, reduce stress and anxiety, enhance sports performance, remove trauma and painful memories, and reduce physical pain, illness or addiction. These techniques are also being used worldwide with children to improve children’s resilience, self-esteem and eliminate negative emotions such as fear or anger. EFT Tapping is a truly whole-self healing through releasing the mind and body from emotions that are not beneficial.

If you’re wondering how this actually works and if there is any research then read about The Science here.

READ MORE ABOUT THE SCIENCE

The Science

EFT has been researched in more than 10 countries which began in the 1990’s, by more than 60 investigators, whose results have been published in more than 20 different peer-reviewed journals (over 130 publications) and has been used for over 40 years.

Tapping on acupuncture points was the foundation of the science which early on was not well supported by Western therapies due to the belief that meridians where an energy field and did not actually exist. As more research has emerged it has proven to have extensive effects on the brain, stress hormones, nervous system, immune function and DNA regulation.

Dr Peta Stapleton Ph.D. is the leading researcher on EFT in Australia and has had many articles published showing its effectiveness.  Dr Stapleton has been involved with investigations using EFT for food cravings, cigarette smoking, cancer patients, chronic pain, stress, major depression and fear of failure in high-achieving students.  Other research in the area of trauma and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) has also shown profound results.

How it works

By stimulating points on your face and upper body by tapping with two fingers and stating the negative about an issue/ situation / memory your brain literally changes.  Just by tapping you are calming your amygdala (the stress centre that triggers stress hormone production such as cortisol) and enabling the hippocampus (the memory, learning, emotion and motivation centre) to work more proficiently. These two areas work together to decide if a situation is a threat or safe.

Conversely if you are frequently (or constantly) in a state of stress, panic or anxiety then your amygdala is being over-activated and so is the trigger to produce cortisol.  Increased levels of this stress hormone reduce immune function, are pro-inflammatory and may cause accumulation of fat around the abdomen.  The unwanted effects of stress are many, however can be undone by simply tapping.
